Date of Joker 2’s Streaming Release: Where and When to Watch the Joaquin Phoenix DC Film

Warner Bros. confirms the release date and platform for Todd Phillips’ DC Elseworlds film Joker: Folie à Deux. On October 4, 2024, Joker: Folie à Deux was released in theatres. On a $200 million budget, the Joker sequel made $206 million worldwide, although both reviewers and viewers gave it mediocre to unfavorable reviews. Reviews complimented Joker: Folie à Deux’s cinematography and Joaquin Phoenix’s performance, but criticised the film’s depressing conclusion and its demonisation of Arthur Fleck’s Joker persona.

Joker: Joker: Folie à Deux will be accessible only on Max on Friday, December 13, 2024. Joker: On Saturday, December 14 at 8:00 p.m. ET, Joker: Folie à Deux will also be accessible on HBO linear. Joker: The streaming version of Folie à Deux will be available just over two months before its October 4 theatrical debut.

The Implications for Joker 2

Due to studios sending films to streaming services nearly quickly after their theatrical release, and occasionally even straight to streaming, streaming release dates were controversial during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. Streaming release windows have shrunk significantly compared to pre-pandemic eras, despite the abandonment of this strategy. For example, comic book films such as Matt Reeves’ The Batman are now accessible on streaming just one month after their theatrical debut. This isn’t the case with Joker: Folie à Deux, despite its lacklustre performance.

When Can We Expect The Joker 2 to Stream?

Discussions about Joker: Folie à Deux, Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel, focused on how different it was from the original film and how it inverted many of the features that had been so successful in 2019’s Joker, mainly to negative reactions, as soon as the film opened in theatres. Joker: With an opening weekend gross of $38 million, Folie à Deux fell well short of box office projections and critics’ ratings, which still rank it at the bottom of DC’s filmography. However, in the two months between its theatrical and streaming debuts, Joker: Folie à Deux was able to recoup its investment (excluding marketing).

As of right now, it seems unlikely that Joker: Folie à Deux will get a sequel because both the cast and director Todd Phillips will be moving on to other projects unrelated to DC Comics. With James Gunn’s DCU and Matt Reeves’ Batman universe, DC will continue to develop its film franchises in parallel but independent ways. For those who value Joker: Folie à Deux as a stand-alone experiment that never sought to develop into a large-scale franchise or film trilogy, it will be accessible on streaming services.
